Program Description

Every week, we get questions from clients asking, How do we really know what our users want? How do we ensure our design will work for users? How can we be confident that our design changes are actually improving our product? To answer these questions, Christine Perfetti, has put together a 2-day Usability Bootcamp, to provide you with the skills to evaluate and improve your designs.

User research and usability testing are the best way to ensure your design works for users. While many teams come to Perfetti Media for consulting services, our research shows that the best way to incorporate user research and testing into your organization's process is to conduct the work in-house.

At the Bootcamp, you'll see how to use usability tests to measure the quality of a design. And, you'll see how simple changes to your development process can dramatically improve your product.

Over the course of two days, we'll teach you all of the steps to conduct your own usability tests, including how to plan the tests, recruit users, facilitate the sessions, analyze the data, and communicate the results.

In the Usability Bootcamp, you'll learn:

  • How to plan and conduct interviews with users in their environment. You'll see how to observe critical details about your users that just isn't possible with other techniques.
  • How to develop user personas from your user research. Christine will walk you through a proven and easy-to-learn method for developing personas. You'll learn how to build the personas and scenarios and communicate the personas throughout your organization.
  • How to plan all of the steps for a successful usability test: how to plan the tests, recruit users, facilitate the sessions, analyze the data, and communicate the results.
  • How to create a fully working paper mock-up of any proposed design, which you can use to collect usability data through usability testing.
  • How to take advantage of advanced usability methods only practiced by the most experienced design teams: Among the techniques you'll learn about: 5 second page tests, comprehension tests, catalog-based tests, surrogate testing, and inherent value tests.
  • How to conduct remote research with users. Christine will share the most effective techniques for conducting usability tests remotely.
  • How to recruit the right users. You'll see some simple techniques for writing a good screening questionnaire that quickly identifies the perfect participants.
  • What makes a good task? Christine will show you how to write tasks that get you the answers you're seeking. You'll review examples of both good and poor scenarios.
  • How to become a better facilitator. You'll learn proven techniques for keeping the participants relaxed while they share their frustrations and delights with the design.
  • The best ways to analyze the test results. You'll see how to decide what to report and how it can best help your particular audience, whether it's senior management or members of the technical staff.

The two days is jam packed with hands-on exercises to create design mock-ups and evaluate the designs with real users. We've also planned for lots of discussion time so you can adapt these new techniques to your own practice.
